Ohio’s New Rules for Opiate Maintenance Treatment

Responding to the Heroin and Opiate Addiction Epidemic, the State Medical Board of Ohio recently released proposed rules for office based treatment of opioid addiction using buprenorphine products such as Suboxone.

The rules, not yet final, include special registration for doctors to prescribe buprenorphine products, rigorous requirements for testing, diagnosis and follow on treatment of addicts and support for an individualized treatment plan including participation in behavioral health treatment and/or twelve step program such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.
